Custom Roof Scuppers in Bakersfield, CA

K9 Custom Roofing fabricates and installs custom roof scuppers and drainage details for buildings across Bakersfield and Kern County. Standing water is the fastest way to ruin a flat roof, and off the shelf parts rarely fit an existing parapet or wall detail. We measure, fabricate and flash each scupper on site so water leaves the roof cleanly instead of backing up against the edge.

Off the shelf parts rarely fit an existing parapet or wall detail. We measure, fabricate and flash each scupper so water leaves the roof cleanly.

We also correct undersized or clogged existing drainage that is causing ponding and overflow damage.

What is included in custom scupper work

A K9 Custom Roofing scupper project includes measuring the roof area and drainage load, fabricating the scupper and collector box from sheet metal to fit your exact parapet detail, cutting and framing the opening, then flashing and sealing the assembly into the roof membrane. We finish the exterior metal to match the building. The result drains the roof at the rate it actually needs rather than the rate a stock part happens to provide.

Drainage load calculation for the roof area served
Custom sheet metal fabrication sized to your parapet
Collector box and downspout connection where required
Opening cut, framed and waterproofed properly
Scupper flashed and sealed into the existing roof system
Overflow scuppers added where code or ponding requires
Exterior metal finished to match the building

Signs your roof drainage is undersized or failing

Roof drainage is failing when water stays on the roof more than 48 hours after rain, spills over the parapet edge instead of exiting through the scupper, or leaves staining down the exterior wall. Rust at the scupper throat, separated collector boxes and interior leaks near the parapet are the other common indicators. Ponding water is heavy and it accelerates membrane failure everywhere it sits.

Water standing more than 48 hours after rain
Overflow spilling across the parapet during heavy rain
Staining or efflorescence running down exterior walls
Rust, separation or crushed metal at the scupper throat
Interior leaks appearing near the parapet or wall line
Debris repeatedly blocking an undersized opening

What custom scupper work costs in Bakersfield

Scupper pricing depends on how many openings the roof needs, the size and gauge of metal being fabricated, whether the parapet has to be cut and reframed, and how much surrounding membrane must be opened and rebuilt to flash the assembly properly. Adding an overflow scupper next to an existing opening is a modest job. Reworking the drainage on a whole commercial parapet is a larger one. We price the fabrication and the roof work together so there is no gap between trades.

Metals we fabricate with

We fabricate scuppers, collector boxes and coping from the metals that hold up in Kern County heat and rain. The choice comes down to appearance, corrosion exposure and budget.

How the scupper process works

Scupper work runs in four steps: we assess the drainage problem, take field measurements, fabricate the metal to those measurements, then install and flash it into the roof. Because the metal is made to your building rather than pulled off a shelf, the fit is tight and the flashing detail is clean.

  1. 1
    Drainage assessment

We look at where water ponds, where it overflows and how much roof area drains to each point.

  2. 2
    Field measurement

Exact parapet, wall and membrane dimensions are taken so the metal fits the opening as built.

  3. 3
    Fabrication

The scupper, collector box and any coping are fabricated in the specified metal and finish.

  4. 4
    Install and flash

The opening is prepared, the assembly is set, then flashed and sealed into the roof system and tested.

FAQ

Custom Scuppers questions

How do I know my roof drainage is undersized?+

Water standing more than 48 hours after rain, overflow at the parapet during storms, or staining running down exterior walls are all signs the openings cannot move water fast enough for the roof area they serve.

Can you match the existing metal on my building?+

Yes. We fabricate to match the color, gauge and profile of existing building details wherever possible, and can work in galvanized, Kynar coated steel, aluminum, copper or stainless.

Is scupper work only for commercial buildings?+

No. Any flat or low slope roof with parapet walls can need scupper work, including residential additions, patio covers and modern flat roofed homes.

Do you also fix the roof around the scupper?+

Yes. Fabrication and the roofing work are done by the same company, so the metal is flashed and sealed into the membrane correctly rather than handed off between trades.
